Coffin

Coffin — Lenormand card illustration

Meaning

An ending, and the emptiness immediately after it. The Coffin is a matter concluded — something finished, closed, or set down. It is the deck's clearest card of termination, and in the tradition it also touches on illness, loss, and grief.

It should be read as an ending rather than a death. Most Coffins in most readings are jobs ending, relationships closing, phases finishing. Treating the card as literal mortality is both inaccurate and, in a reading for someone anxious, unkind.

The tone is heavy and still. The Coffin does not move. What distinguishes it from the Scythe is speed and agency: the Scythe cuts, the Coffin has already ended.

Beside other cards

Often the subject. When it modifies, it closes its neighbour — Coffin + Ring is an agreement ended, Coffin + Mice is a loss that has run its course. Beside Tree it warrants care in health questions and should be read conservatively.
