Whip

Meaning

Conflict and repetition. The Whip is argument, friction, and things that recur — a quarrel returned to, a pattern repeating, a physical or verbal back-and-forth. Its motion is rhythmic: whatever it touches happens more than once.

The tradition also gives it physical exertion and, in some lines, physical intimacy — the card covers a range of repeated bodily activity, and context does the work of distinguishing.

The tone is abrasive but active. The Whip is not despair; it is friction, and friction implies both parties are still engaged. It is often more workable than the flatness of the Cross or the stillness of the Coffin.
